We actually have 3 "first presidents" of our country.

The first elected leader was John Hancock. Hancock served as the head of a coalition of separate sovereign states which later became the United States. But, was clearly not intended as a nation at that time.

The second and probably technically "the first" was John Hanson. Hanson served as the first elected leader of our "nation" as established by the Articles of Confederation. George Washington, and others refused to run against Hanson and joined in electing him as President.

Technically the eighth president was George Washington. However, because he was the first president elected under the newly ratified "Constitution" which then replaced the Articles of Confederation he has been portrayed by schoolbooks as the "First President as provided under the Constitution".

This has been widely accepted because the Constitution specifically placed the President as a formal branch of Government and defines his powers radically changing the job of President. It does not negate that Congress, and the office of president existed before Washington and, that Washington himself voted to elect our first president, John Hanson.

History shows that Washington's supporters rallied to overthrow President Hanson and the US congress to replace our nation with a monarchy featuring Washington as King. Having enduring this failed coup, I can understand how, once Washington was in power, rewrote history to minimize and erase the true history of real patriots that fought to create our nation and the freedoms we enjoy today.
