Isaac Asimov received a blood transfusion tainted with HIV in 1983 when he underwent bypass surgery in New York city. The blood supply was not being widely tested at that time, and New York's blood supply was likely one of the most severely tainted anywhere. It was not until several years later that Asimov's wife noted he had symptoms of AIDS, and even then his doctors laughed off the suggestion and refused to have him tested. Finally in 1990, as Asimov was preparing for another round of heart surgery, he was tested and found to be infected with HIV. He died in 1992 from renal and heart failure due to complications of AIDS. Even then, his doctors convinced the Asimov family to keep the secret, arguing that the rest of the family might suffer persecution as suspected "people with aids". His wife finally revealed the true cause of Dr. Asimov's death in her edited version of his memoirs some ten years later.
