Tempe proper was originally named "Hayden's Ferry" after the settlement there, controlled by the Hayden family who built a ferry over the Salt River. The name Tempe was chosen and adopted in 1879 because a pioneer found that the palo verde trees carpeting the area reminded him of the Vale of Tempe, a remarkably lush region of Greece.
