The number of atoms is the number of protons for an element. It is the number above the element when you look at the Periodic Table of Elements. For Carbon, it is 6.

Answer Carbon has by definition 6 protons. However, its many isotopes can have anywhere from 2 neutrons to 16 neutrons, with 6 neutrons being the most common (~95% of all carbon).
